1996-97

 

    • Society mounts Red Card Campaign for legislative fix for annualization of estimated taxes
    • Society works with Regulation and Licensing Department on legislation to privatize Public Accountancy Board
    • Society joins with the AICPA to create a comprehensive Vision for the profession and hosts facilitated meetings to gain input from CPAs throughout New Mexico
    • Society runs ads in business publications "A CPA Can Make the Difference between Being Right on Target or Becoming One."  The CPA, Never Underestimate the Value


1997-98

 

    • Society forms separate organization for PAC with $10 voluntary check off added to dues renewal invoice
    • Society Board of Directors votes to rotate Board meeting location for one meeting per year, first meeting is in Roswell on October 2, 1997
    • Society co-sponsors with State Board of Public Accountancy town hall meeting for CPAs from throughout Eastern New Mexico in Roswell to coincide with Board of Directors meeting
    • Legislative initiatives revolve around Corporate Income Tax Amendments, "Pass-Through Entity Withholding Tax Act"
    • New Mexico joins Georgia and Nevada Societies in June at Pt. Clear, Alabama for joint meeting
    • Society Board approves moving forward with Fee Arbitration Panel to resolve fee disputes between clients and CPAs 


1998-99

 

    • Pride in the Profession luncheon gains national coverage with three women Presidents of AICPA, IMA and Women in Accounting joining together to share the platform
    • Society works with Senator Tim Jennings on SB 423, a 40 page bill that completely rewrites accountancy statutes
    • Beginning in July 1998 firm registrations require all firms doing attestation work to undergo a Peer Review every three years
    • Society Board approves moving to CPA Society association management database software.
    • NMSCPA hosts Leadership Retreat at the YWCA Pinon Canyon Center with facilitation by Jean Block
    • Federal Tax Restructuring proposals, including Flat Tax program, result in eight members of NM Society of CPAs making a special trip to Washington, DC for meetings with Congressional delegation
    • Society hosts 1st PAC fundraising reception for State Auditor Domingo Martinez

 
1999-00

 

    •  Society unveils study showing CPAs average 22 hours per month in pro bono work to their communities equating to $2 million in professional fees per year
    • Caring Professionals in Action program recognizes CPAs across NM for their volunteerism
    • Society Chief Staff Officer travels the State with Secretary of Tax and Rev, Deputy Secretary and Audit Manager to educate members on new Pass Thru Entity Rules
    • State Auditor and Society co-sponsor two educational programs on GASB 34 totaling 500 attendees
    • Legislation is passed which allows CPAs to take commission and contingent fees and changes CPA ownership requirement to 51% of CPA firms
    • Society Chief Staff Officer travels the State with State Board Exec holding information seminars on the 1999 Accountancy Act changes
    • Society Education Funds provides a record $42,000 in scholarships
    • Team of State Society Execs perform Peer Consultation of NM Society and makes several recommendations for areas of improvement
    • Society, Education Funds and Foundation for Education Research completely rewrites bylaws, articles of incorporation and revamps governance model

 

 

2000-01

 

    • Society works with State Board to gain CPE credit for CPAs teaching in the Jr. Achievement program
    • Society actively works with Tax and Rev on Cerro Grande Fire tax issues, participates in joint conferences with Tax and Rev providing information to the public and CPAs
    • Society Chief Staff Officer works with State Board Exec to rewrite all accountancy administrative rules as a result of the 1999Accountancy Act
    • Society enhances website by adding the online CPE registrations
    • Society lobbies for modifications to Accountancy Act to correct language mistakenly removed in previous legislative efforts dealing with fees charged for certain tax work.
    • Society begins implementing new governance model with four sections:  Professional Development, Brand, Member Marketplace and Advocacy
    • Member Marketplace section hosts Dollars and $ense of Using Technology CPE track in conjunction with the Pride in the Profession luncheon
    • Problems with late government audits results in HJM 76 which calls for "Aggressive Application of Public Accountancy Regulations and Standards"
    • Society hosts 11 Russian accountants for a week, arranging host homes, education endeavors, and social events.

 

2001-02

 

    • October 2001 SEC begins investigation of ENRON.  Society monitors and updates membership on associated issues
    • Society regularly meets with State Auditor, LFC, DFA, and State Board to address issues raised in HJM 76. Society Chair is part of a panel presenting an interim report to the LFC on HJM 76 in Taos
    • Society works on legislative initiative to revise Corporate Estimated Tax statute
    • Society signs on to AICPA CPA Image Enhancement Partnership Program for matching funds to be used for print and radio advertising.  With matching funds NMSCPA spends $43,750 

 

2002-03

 

    • Society creates TV ads highlighting the 20,000 hours of volunteer work by NM CPAs 
    • SOX legislation (HB 495) is introduced in the Legislature.  Bill is withdrawn by sponsor and HJM 86 which called for the State Auditor to Study the Need for Stricter Conflict of Interest Standards for Public Accountants
    • Society participates in numerous meetings on HJM 86
    • Society works on legislation to correct problems with Estimated Tax Payments for individuals

 

 

2003-04

 

    • Previous legislative session ignites the need for a stronger PAC and two volunteers raise $18,000
    • Society reinstates liaison meetings with Secretary of Tax and Rev
    • Society PR consultant places article on fraud in 11 newspapers across the state, each article quoting a local CPA
    • Society forms GAAP Task Force to inform members on the national dialogue on the need for differential standards for private companies.  NMSCPA hosts three focus groups in Albuquerque for the AICPA on this issue
    • Society participates in meetings on HJM 86 with legislators, State Auditors offices Board of Accountancy
    • Society Task Force monitors Blue Ribbon Tax Commission meetings
    • Society works with HUD on program on the basics of an audit for HUD agency personnel
    • Society forms Comprehensive Annual Financial Report Task Force to work with State Auditor and DFA to gain a better understanding of the impact of the CAFR on government audits.  Society lobbies Governor to keep the current state audit system rather going to one firm auditing all state agencies as recommended by the Governor's business consultants
    • Society negotiates revisions to proposed Tax and Rev Department bill providing statutory authority for the new Fraud Division
    • Society supports legislation to transition the CPA exam from paper and pencil to the computerized exam
    • Society hosts legislative reception in Albuquerque during the Fall 

 

2004-05

 

    • Pride in the Profession luncheon has record attendance with AICPA President Barry Melancon as key note speaker
    • Memorial scholarship in honor of former Society President Sanford Rogoff kicks off with over $23,000 in contributions during the first year
    • Brand Management Section begins monthly TV interviews discussing financial literacy
    • Society monitors and encourages members to participate in the Public Accountancy Board town hall meetings to discuss federal Sarbanes Oxley legislation and the possible need for this type of legislation in NM
    • In the 3rd year of the Society mentor program with Beta Alpha Psi members, Society makes   minor changes to the structure of the program to enhance the relationships between student and mentors
    • Society website inaugurates Find a CPA eliminating the referral program administered by the Society staff
    • CPA exam goes to computer based technology and is offered throughout the year

 

2005-06

 

    • State Board begins requiring a swearing in ceremony for new CPAs and the Society sponsors the reception, provides a gift for each new CPA and as part of the program the Chair makes comments about participation in the professional organization
    • NMSCPA co-sponsored with AICPA the Women to Watch award which was given to six outstanding women at the Pride in the Profession luncheon
    • Society President and State Board Executive Director make several visits around the state to inform CPAs about new Board rules and changes in licensing procedures
    • Special electronic alerts are sent to members on recent changes in practice privileges in California and Texas, along with periodic news from Tax and Rev and the IRS, as well as Legislative Alerts during the session
    • Society hosts a major meeting with firms, educators and NMSCPA Board members to discuss issues and concerns over fewer students and accounting graduates not becoming CPAs
    • Newly formed Building Task Force explores options for a new home of the Society  

 

2006-07

 

    • The Building Task Force looks for land, discusses needs with developers, talks to banks about financing, and the fundraisers begin quiet campaign to raise funds for acquiring land and building a new facility
    • Society works with graduate students on class project relating to accounting graduates and their career decisions
    • Society makes outreach to community colleges with presentation in conjunction with Becker Review program coordinator
    • Society changes from four printed journals to 10 printed newsletters a year
    • Education Foundation awards over $20,000  in scholarships to NM students majoring in accounting
    • AICPA Chair keynotes Pride in the Profession luncheon introducing Feed the Pig
